James was born in 1783.  James' father was Lindsey Marshall and his mother was Nancy Mercer.  His paternal grandparents were James Marshall and Jane Lindsey. He had three brothers and three sisters, named William V, David, Lemon, Ruth, Rebecca and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 59 in 1842.
