James was born in August 1736 in Lancaster Co, PA.  James' father was Dr Thomas  Erwin of Lancaster Ewing and his mother was Susanna Howard.  His paternal grandparents are James Ewing and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were <Unknown> and <Unknown>. He had a brother named John. He had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, named James, John, Sarah, Susanna and Rebecca.  He died about 1806.
