        (3) c.1772/3: Bought from Andrew VAN SWEARINGEN 700 acres on Chartiers Creek for
        for $160. Was one of the earliest settlers on Chartiers Creek at Catfish Camp,
        later Washington, Washington Co., PA.
        (3) 1774, 2 Oct: After an attack by Mingo Indians on the Harmon GREATHOUSE
        cabin at Harmon's creek, 24 miles above Wheeling (WV), everyone in the cabin
        fled to the mile-distant cabin of Thomas EDGINGTON, which was much better
        fortified and had a dozen men on hand. Just after dark as a light drizzle was
        falling, the Indians attacked the EDGINGTON cabin and fired upon it at
        intervals until nearly midnight before finally leaving.
        (3) 1779, spring: At age 35, was chosen by Capt. Samuel BRADY to be one of his
        Rangers, which also included Samuel MURPHY, Peter PARCHMENT, John and Abram
        CUPPY, and Vachel and Kinzie DICKERSON. Thomas EDGINGTON was the eldest of
        this group who had a great deal of scouting and Indian fighting in his
        background. Described as a man of about 5 feet 8 inches tall, 160 pounds,
        serious and highly dependable, a very swift runner, and could lift objects
        much heavier than any of his neighbors could manage. They operated out of
        Fort Pitt at Pittsburgh and were responsible for scouting the area along the
        eastern shore of the Ohio River for signs of Indians, attacking raiding
        parties, warning settlements, and rescuing captured settlers. The Rangers
        operated until peace was finally established in 1795.
        (3) 1780, 17 Aug: Moved his family from their Chartier's Creek claim to
        Holliday's Cove, which was settled in 1771 by Harmon GREATHOUSE, John
        DODDRIDGE, Benjamin BIGGS, and George LEFLER. It was 66 miles down the Ohio
        River from Fort Pitt and 25 miles above Wheeling Creek, a couple of miles up
        Harmon's Creek on the site of present Holliday's Cove, Hancock Co., West Virginia.
        (3) 1781, Aug: Holliday's Cove Fort burned accidentally, and Thomas EDGINGTON
        and others undertook to rebuild it. It was nearly completed by Apr 1782.
        (3) 1782, 1 Apr: Captured by a Wyandot Indian party a mile up Harmon's Creek
        from his home. The party was led by Scotach and Simon GIRTY. On arrival at
        Half King's Town, EDGINGTON was forced to run the gauntlet, which he did
        bravely and well. Monakaduto (Half King), the chief and Scotach's father,
        liked what he saw and announced that he might adopt this white to take the
        place of his son Dakadulah, who had been killed 6 months earlier in a fight
        with Andrew POE. Monakaduto's wife, however, whom EDGINGTON referred to as
        "the old queen," objected so strenously that Monakaduto gave up on the idea.
        EDGINGTON was held captive in the village for 3 months before finally being
        sold to the British at Detroit. During his captivity, Scotach had treated him
        very well, as if they were brothers. EDGINGTON later said that "Scotach has
        the highest principles and is the noblest and best man I ever met, be he white,
        black or red."
        (3) Was shipped by the British from Detroit to Montreal and then to Kingston on
        the Hudson River, from which place he was released with Daniel KINNEY and John
        FITCH.
        (3) 1793, Mar: Returned to the upper Ohio. His family had moved back to
        Chartiers Creek, not knowing whether he was still alive.
