William, known as The Great, was born in 1020 in Bourgogne, France.1   The Great's father was Count Palatine Renaud de Macon I and his mother was Princess Aelis Adelaide of Normandy.  His paternal grandparents were Count of Burgundy Otto William de Macon of Burgundy and Ermentrude Adelaide de Roucy; his maternal grandparents were 4th Duke of Normandy Richard (The Good) Normandy II and Judith of Brittany. He had a brother and two sisters, named Amorie, Alberada and Helen.  He died at the age of 67 on November 11th, 1087 in Besancon, Doubs, Franche-Comte, France.2
