Aaron's father was Richard Thomas Skaggs and his mother was Mary Thear. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Bussell Skaggs and Ann Wollard. He had three brothers and a sister, named Richard, James, Thomas and Susannah. He was the oldest of the five children.
