William Nathan was born on January 25th, 1865 in , Crawford County, Arkansas, USA.1 William Nathan's father was Benjamin Franklin Shipley and his mother was Mary Sharp Lester. His paternal grandparents were Benjamin Franklin SHIPLEY and Sarah "Sally" BURKETT. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Samuel S., Walter, Benjamin Franklin, Harrison Edmond, Alice, Margaret and Virginia Mae. He was the second oldest of the eight children.
