Margaret was born about 1845 in , , Tennessee, USA.1 Margaret's father was Nathan Shipley and her mother was Charlotte Campbell. Her paternal grandparents were Richard SHIPLEY and Henrietta HUGHES. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Marion, Richard, William Nathan, Nathan Taylor, Louiza, Mary, Elizabeth and Delila. She was the third youngest of the nine children.-
