Alexander's father was Alexander Scott and his mother was Susan Gibbons.  His maternal grandparents were John Gibbons and <Unknown>. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, James, William, Liddy, Rhoda, Elizabeth and Polly.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
