John was born about 1437 in Glenerochie, Perthshire, Scotland. John's father was 9th of Glenerochie Alexander Robertson and his mother was Elizabeth Lyon. His paternal grandfather was 8th of Glenerochie Robert 'Ruadh'. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Duncan, Robert, Andrew, James, Alexander, Mary, Margaret and Janet. He was the third youngest of the nine children.-
