His maternal grandparents were Benjamin Franklin Shipley and Mary Sharp Lester. He had five brothers and a sister, named James Cornelius, Joseph Lafayette, George Washington, Charles W., Benjamin Valentine and Dora Gertrude. He was the third oldest of the seven children.
