Stephen S. was born on December 29th, 1861 in Ozark County, Missouri. Stephen S.'s father was Jacob Virden Foster and his mother was Sally Ann "Sally " Sanders. His paternal grandparents were Micajah Harris Foster and Sally Verden. He had six brothers and six sisters, named Micajah Lafayette, Thomas A., Joseph Franklin, John Humble, Samuel Bartlett, Benjamin B., Martha A., James High, Jane P., Ibbie L, Mary Elizabeth and Sarah Eliza. He was the fifth oldest of the thirteen children.-
