Maggie Z. was born about 1878 in North Carolina.¹ Maggie Z.'s father was William Dennis "Denny" Foster and her mother was Margaret Ann Veach. Her paternal grandparents were James M Foster and Ann Torrentine. She had two brothers and five sisters, named Denny Columbus, George Alfred, Mary Elizabeth, Effie J., Docio, Sarah "Sallie" A and Frances Victoria. She was the fourth youngest of the eight children.
