Her paternal grandparents were James M Foster and Ann Torrentine. She had two brothers and five sisters, named Denny Columbus, George Alfred, Mary Elizabeth, Maggie Z., Docio, Sarah "Sallie" A and Frances Victoria. She was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
