Melvina was born in November 1885 in , , Texas, USA.1 Melvina's father was James A. J. Butler and her mother was Sarah Jane Bishop. Her maternal grandparents were Benjamin Earl Bishop and Naomi Jane Shipley. She had six brothers and two sisters, named John Lee, J. V., Wyite B., Jasper, George Washington, Ralph C., Malinda A. and Sallie Ann. She was the third oldest of the nine children.-
