John was born in 1824.1   John's father was Rueben Nash and his mother was Nancy Tinkelpaugh.  His paternal grandparents were Rueben Nash and Lydia Edwards. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Rueben, Adam, Hiram, Mary Ann, Harriet, Lydia, Nancy and Marietta.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.1
