Ruben was born in 1848 in Wayne, Kentucky.1   Ruben's father was John C Hurt and his mother was Frances Unknown. He had four brothers and four sisters, named William, Joshua, Samuel, Moses, Milly, Martha, Mary and Saphrona.  He was the youngest of the nine children.1
