John was born about 1849.1   John's father was William Holden and his mother was Martha Nicholson.  His paternal grandfather was John Holden; his maternal grandparents were Ira Nicholson and Jane Palmour. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named William, Ira, Andrew Perkins, Virgil Franklin, Adeline, Minerva, Jane, Harriet [Hattie], Sue, Amanda Malinda and Martha.  He was the fifth oldest of the twelve children.1
