Jane was born about 1845 in Clayton, Rabun, Georgia.1   Jane's father was William Holden and her mother was Martha Nicholson.  Her paternal grandfather was John Holden; her maternal grandparents were Ira Nicholson and Jane Palmour. She had five brothers and six sisters, named John, William, Ira, Andrew Perkins, Virgil Franklin, Adeline, Minerva, Harriet [Hattie], Sue, Amanda Malinda and Martha.  She was the third oldest of the twelve children.1
