William was born in 1654 in Sandwich, Massachusetts.1   William's father was William Gifford and his mother was Mary Danforth. He had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Hananiah, Robert, Christopher, Patience and Mary. He had three half-brothers named Jonathan, James and James.  He died at the age of 85 in 1739 in Falmouth, Massachusetts.1
