Joseph was born on August 6th, 1708.1   Joseph's father was Thomas Burgess and his mother was Martha Wilbore Closson.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Burgess and Lydia Gaunt. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Jacob, John, Mary and Martha. He had two half-brothers and seven half-sisters, named Edward, Nathaniel, Deborah, Esther, Abigail, Lydia, Rebecca, Martha and Mercy.1
