Robert was born about 1034 in Of, , Normandie, France.1   Robert's father was Robert De Grentmesnil and his mother was Hawise De Eschauffen.  His paternal grandfather was Gervase De Grentmesnil; his maternal grandparents were Giroie De Eschauffen and Gisele von Montfort. He had two brothers and a sister, named Hugh, Arnold and Adeliza.  He was the second oldest of the four children.1
