His paternal grandfather was John Lyon and his paternal grandmother is Elizabeth Graham; his maternal grandparents were Walter Ogilvie and Isobel Glen. He had two sisters named Janet and Elizabeth. He was the second oldest of the three children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Laurence and Elizabeth.
