Gilbert was born in 1003 in Luxembourg.  Gilbert's father was I Frederick and his mother is Ermentrude De Herbert.  His paternal grandparents were Siegfried II De Ardennes and Hedwig Alscanian Nordgau; his maternal grandfather was UNKNOWN Herbert and his maternal grandmother is ErmentruDe Von Avalgau. He had a brother and three sisters, named Giselbert I of, Ogiva, Irmtrud and Gisele.  He was the second youngest of the five children.  He died at the age of 56 on August 14th, 1059.
