Caradoc ap was born in 1018 in Powys, Montgomeryshire, Wales.  Caradoc ap's father is Cynfyn ap Gwerystan and his mother is Angharad verch Maredydd.  His maternal grandfather was Maredudd ap Owain. He had two brothers and a sister, named Bleddyn ap, Rhiwallon ap and Iwerydd verch.  He is the oldest of the four children. He had a half-brother named Gruffydd ap.
