Landis was born on February 2nd, 1827 in Bow, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. Landis' father was Jr. Morgan David and his mother was Polly Andres Colby. His maternal grandfather was Willoughby Colby and his maternal grandmother is Molly Sargent. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Sr. Morgan Johnson, Laurens, Mary Sanborn, Harriet Amanda, Theresa and Rufina. He is the fourth oldest of the seven children.-
