Sarah was born on November 10th, 1779 in Bow, Merrimack, New Hampshire. Sarah's father was Willoughby Colby and her mother was Sarah Sargent. Her maternal grandparents were Phillip Sargent and Martha Hadley. She had two brothers and five sisters, named James, Philip, Hepsebeth, Sarah, Shirley, Mariam and Judith. She was the youngest of the eight children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Willoughby and Polly Andres.-
