George was born on March 17th, 1819 in Bog District, Bow, Merrimack County, New Hampshire. George's father was Willoughby Colby and his mother was Betsey M. Morgan. His paternal grandparents were James Colby and Susannah Stewart. He had three brothers named Moses, Erie and Irad. He is the oldest of the four children. He had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Amos, Irad, Willaby, Lucinda and Betsey Ann.-
