His paternal grandparents were Nelson Chatfield and Hannah Ward. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Luther Mckay, Jaudon Benjamin, Carl S, Virgia May, Pearl Elizabeth and Marjorie Belle. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 77 on September 7th, 1983 in Palmyra, Marion, Missouri.
