John Love 
John was born in 1831 in Onondaga, NY, USA.1 John's father was Clinton LOVE and his mother was Mary Elizabeth Stalker. His paternal grandparents were Richard Love and Charlotte Rose; his maternal grandparents are John STALKER and Clarissa (Clara) Bradt. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Jerimiah, George Washington, Henry Clinton, Albert, Lucretia, Clarissa, Rachel Jane, Alida Mae and Mary Lydia. He was the third oldest of the ten children. He died at the age of 33 on October 28th, 1864 in Marrieta, Atlanta, GA, USA.1 General Notes

We can only guess at the reasons why John volunteered on the side of the union in the war between the northern and the southern states. Maybe he was motivated by his hatred for slavery; maybe he felt it was his duty to serve his President and his country; maybe he was having difficulty making a decent living through farming, and felt that his growing family would benefit from his service.
He was mustered into service on Christmas day 1863 at Janesville, Wisconsin by Capt. Putman. Pvt. Love served in Co. F of the 16th Regiment, infantry, Wisconsin volunteers. At that time, his wife was 22 years old and the mother of three children aged 7, 5, and 3; and she was almost 5 months pregnant with her son, Webster.
The 16th Regiment, Wisconsin volunteers was organized at Madison and mustered into service January 31, 1862. The volunteers were at the Battle of Shiloh, TN. in April of that same yearand fought at the Battle of Corinth, MS. in October.
When John enlisted, this regiment had moved from operations in Mississippi to Tennessee to Georgia, and were at the Red Bone Church area until February 5, 1864. The regiment then moved to garrison duty at Vicksburg until March 4th, and then on into Cairo, Ill. in April; Clifton Tennessee May 4, then marched to Ackworth, Georgia via Huntsville and Decatur, Alabama.
They were at the Battle of Atlanta in July under the command of Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman, and drove back the rebel forces of Gen. John Bell Hood. The price of that battle was costly, with an estimated casualty count of 12,140.
We are not certain about John's part in these battles, and we do not know exactly when he first became ill but we do know from his records that Pvt. John Love contracted malaria sometime in the summer of 1864 and was sent to a divisional hospital in Atlanta, GA. where he died on October 28. He is buried in the Marietta, GA. Cemetery.
John's war records state that he was 33 years of age when he enlisted. He had blue eyes, brown hair, a fair complexion, and was 5ft. 9in. in height.
