His paternal grandparents were Phillip Phillips and Jenet Lloyd; his maternal grandparents were Henry Dwinn and Margaret Wogan. He had seven brothers and five sisters, named Sir John, Christopher, Richard, Thomas, Hugh Lewis, William, John-Dyer, Jenet, Anne, Mary, Jenet and Jane.
