Waller, junr., John Wilkins. Feby. 1, 1731-2. Mary, wife of Dannitt Abney, Jr., acknowledged her dower.

"In and among records sent to us in November 1941, by Mrs. Jennie T. Grayson, of Charlottesville, Va., we find her making the following statement: Quote- 'Zachary Lewis, of Brecon or Brecknock, in Brecknockshire, Wales, was the first of his line known to have come to Virginia. His wife's name is unknown. Among the many grants of land to the name of Lewis recorded in the Land Books of Virginia, in the Land Office at Richmond, Va., there are only two to Zachary Lewis. One for 500 acres in King and
Queen Co., Virginia, April 20, 1694, and one for 450 acres in King William County, Va., October 23, 1703. See Books 8, page 318, and book 9, page 556.'

"This coroborates the statement of Rev. Iverson Lewis, that he was the son of John Lewis, whose father Zachary Lewis came from Breaknock, Wales, to Virginia 1692, at which time he settled in the County of King and Queen. And beyond this nothing is known of this Zachary except that he was a member of the Church of England and had two sons--John and Zachary, Jr."

Certainly Zachary was here by 1694, when he " took up" land in King William and King and Queen Counties in 1694 and 1703 as shown in the deeds in the Virginia Library. He located, says Sarah Travers Lewis Scott Anderson in her 'Lewises, Meriwethers and Their Kin,' Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, 1984, on "the high lands of Dragon Swamp in Middlesex Co. His old home was inherited by his younger son, John Lewis, born 1704, who married Sarah Iverson.... "

The following letter copied to me by Ruth McConigly, who got it from the Univ. of So. Carolina collection of Iverson Lewis Brookes' papers. There is no date:

"Register of Zackary Lewis and descendants

We next proceed to the genealogical sketch of our branch of the Lewis family. We are descendants on family tradition as no register can be found of John Lewis our great grand father. In the family register given by Col John Lewis of Ken. our ancestor John the Lawyer was born in 1729. But my grandfather Iveson (sic) Lewis according to my mothers account must have been born about 1742.
She was his oldest child & was born about 1762 her father Iveson Lewis having married at 19 years of age so that our g.grand father must have been born about 1719 instead of 1729. This is a difficulty which Col Lewis & myself have not been able to settle satisfactory. Neither of us have heard of but one John Lewis who was a Lawyer, & Patrick Henry's rival. Dr. Richmond Lewis the brother of Col John Lewis of Frankfort studied medicine with Dr William B. Lewis my mothers brother & recognized Iveson Lewis as the son of his uncle John & my grandfather & family understood Dr Richmond Lewis to be the son of Zackary Lewis the uncle of Iveson Lewis & brother of John Lewis the Lawyer. Another discrepancy between Col John Lewis' family register & our traditionary account is that the mother of John the Lawyer was a Miss Walker. I also understood from my mother that there existed a relationship between her father & the Walker family. But my Aunt Claybrook daughter of Iveson Lewis now living in a letter to me states that she understood through the family that her great grand father Zackary father of John the Lawyer married a widow Hancock. Now as the register of Zackary father of John the Lawyer gives his birth in 1702 & his wifes in 1699 showing her several years his senior she might have been previously married. It would be very easy for every family to keep a register of births marriages deaths & would certainly be satisfactory to descendants. But it seems the several branches of our family have been on this point extremely negligent. The register of John Lewis the lawyer received through tradition as follows John Lewis was married to Sarah Iveson & inherited his fathers family seat near the Dragon Swamp in the County of King & Queen Va Their children were 9 Iveson Anne Zackary Catherine William Sarah Achilles Francis & Christopher Of these only Iveson Anne & Christopher left many descendant all having died early Zackary in order 3rd married & left one child -- Anne who married a Mr. Bird & died without issue. 4 Catherine Lewis married Mr Richards & left two daughters Elizabeth & Anne Elizabeth married a Mr Watts & left two daughters who died early Anne Richards married a Mr Dunn & left one son Thomas Iveson Dunn who has a large family in Va 5 William Lewis married & left a daughter who married George Clopton & left a daughter Caty who was raised by my grandfather & now lives with my Aunt Claybrook unmarried she is about my age & has been from early life a pious Baptist. Sarah Iveson married a Mr Rogers & if she left descendants they are not known 6 Achilles was killed by a flash of lightening while standing in the door with his hand upon the shoulder of & conversing with the lady to whom he was engaged to be married 7 Francis Lewis married John Byne son of Rev Edmund Byne & left two children John & Sarah John has left several descendants Sarah married a Mr Watts & died of consumption 8 Christopher Lewis married a Miss McDonald of D.C. Relative of McDonald who rendered conspicous service with Genl Marrion in the Revolution Christopher Lewis left two children Sarah Iveson who married a Mr Oliver & left a family in Louisiana & John Christopher to be noticed. Register or rather genealogical sketch of Anne Lewis. Anne Lewis was born in Va & spent a portion of her early life with her brother Iveson under whose roof she was married to Rev Edmund Byne a baptist clergyman of some considerable talents she being his 3rd wife Their marriage must have occurred about 1771. After the birth of six children they in 1779 or 1780 emigrated from Va to Kentucky but being dissatisfied they removed about 1781 to Georgia made a stay in Wilkes Co but finally settled Burke County Mrs Byne died Oct 7th 1798 of Hiuvesy She was rather stout & tall but quite handsome & possessed of strong intellect with a gentle & amiable disposition. She was a member of the Baptist Church & remained in its fellowship till death , regarded as a pious & exemplary christian. Her children were Catharine Thomas Lewis & Nancy Susan Richard (((children of))))
I have now given you all & perhaps a little more than I know of the Byne family except your mothers branch of which I want your aid to obtain a more full knowledge. I have given the genealogical sketch of Anne Lewis before my grand fathers because I thought you would be more interested in it. If you desire I will after hearing from you give you a like sketch of my grand father descendants & also Christopher Lewis'. The great error in the sketch sent you was putting the descendants of Zackary of Spotsylvania the brother of John the Lawyer for those of Zackary the brother of my grand father & your grand mother. I am not certain that I have arranged my grand fathers brothers & sisters according to their true ages. And I am strongly inclined to think that our great grand father John Lewis was of a different branch of the original immigrant from Wales & not brother to Zackary the father of Col John of Kentucky although Dr Richmond Lewis & my grand father did recognize that relationship. For Col Johns record of making our great grand fathers birth in 1729 could not possibly be reconcilable to my grand fathers birth in 1741 I am still in correspondence upon this subject. "Susannah (b1669, m. Capt Joseph Collins), Zachary2 (b1702, m. Mary Waller), John (twin b1704, m. Sarah Iverson), Elizabeth (twin b1704, m. James Shackelford), Jane (bca1706, m. Robert George), Mary (b1714, m. Richard Shackelford), & Anne (m. George Wythe). Zachary2 had 10 children (I think):

"Anne (b1726), John (b1729), Zachary3 (b1730), Elizabeth (b1732, m1. Lewis Holliday, m2. James Littlepage), Mourning (b1734), Lucy (b1735), Dorothea (b1737), Waller (b1739), Benjamin (b1744), & Mary (b1727, not sure about this one, m. David Wood Meriweather). I think, no I'm sure, all 3 Zacharys were born in Virginia, probably Old New Kent Co or its successor, King & Queen.

"My line is through Susannah Lewis & Capt Joseph Collins. The 3 Zacharys and all the false info around them made the determination very difficult but this is the best I have come up with. I have done a lot of research over 30 years on these families and I still find surprises that cause corrections. But that's what genealogy is all about. Now that I've given it all away, good luck. Keep doing your own research and use what others give you as guides. Don Page"
