Roland was born in 1508 in Machen, Gwynllwg, Monmouthshire, England. Roland's father was Thomas Morgan and his mother was Elizabeth Vaughan. His paternal grandparents were John I Morgan and Jenet verch John Mathew; his maternal grandparents were Roger Vaughan and Jane Whitney.
