Alexander was born in Dundonald, Ayrshire, Scotland. Alexander's father was Walter I Stewart and his mother was Beatrix Douglas. His paternal grandparents were Alan le Steward and Margaret de Galloway; his maternal grandparents were Gilchrist Douglas De Angus and Marjory of Huntingdon. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Fifth Earl of Menteith (de jure, John, Eupheme, Elizabeth, Margaret and Daughter. He died in 1283 in Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland.General Notes
