Maud was born in 1059 in Apulia (Puglia), Calabria, Italy.  Maud's father was Duke Robert ("Guiscard", "the Astute") de Hauteville I of Apulia and her mother is Princess Sichelgaita of Salerno.  Her paternal grandfather is Sir Tancreed de Hautville and her paternal grandmother was Fredistina of Normandy; her maternal grandparents were Prince Guaimar IV of Salerno and Porpora Tabellaria. She had two sisters named Sybille and Matilda Guiscard.  She was the second oldest of the three children. She had a half-brother named Boemond.  She died at the age of 27 in 1086.

‌Maud and "Towhead" were married in a religious ceremony in 1078.  They had a son and a daughter, named "the Great" and Etienette.
