Gerberga was born in Nordhausen, Saxony, Prussia.  Gerberga's father was Emperor Henry ("the Fowler") I and her mother was Saint Matilda of Ringelheim.  Her paternal grandparents were Duke Otto ("le Grand", "the Illustrious) von Erlauchten of Saxony and Princess Hedwige of the Holy Roman Empire; her maternal grandparents were Count Theodoric von Ringelheim and Reginhild von Friesland. She had two brothers and three sisters, named "the Great", "the Quarrelsome", Oda, Hedwige and Gerberge Auceps.  She died on May 5th, 0984 in Rheims, Marne, France.  She was buried in Rheims Abbey, Marne, France.
