Rudolf I Habsburg 
Rudolf I was born on May 1st, 1218 in Schloss Limburg, Freiburg, Baden, Germany.1 Rudolf I's father was Count Albrecht Of Habsburg and his mother was Hedwige Von Kyburg. His paternal grandparents were Rudolf Habsburg and Agnes Von Staufen. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Albrecht V, Hartmann, Clemence and Kunigunde. He was the oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 73 on July 15th, 1291 in Germersheim, Oberpfalz, Germany.1 General Notes
In 1273 the kurfuersts (a number of counts responsible for electing the Ge
rman emperor) had finally come to a decision: they had elected the rath
er negligible Swiss count 'Rudolf von der Habichtsburg' (Habsburg!) on t
he strength of his very
insignificance. By this they expected to lose as little power of their o
wn as possible.
However, their hopes were to be disappointed. Already in 1278 Rudolf defea
ted his mightiest opponent Premysl II Otakar, Emperor of Bohemia. This vic
tory made Rudolf unchallenged Emperor of Germany and won him the lan
ds of Austria. Viennese
'Hofburg' became his residency and would be the Imperial residence of Hou
se Habsburg till the end of the dynasty.
