Charles V Emperor 
Charles V was born in Gand, Spanish Flanders, Belgium.1 Charles V's father was King Philip Von Hapsburg and his mother was Joanna Trastamara. His paternal grandparents were Emperor Maximilian Von Hapsburg and Marie De Bourgogne; his maternal grandparents were Rey Ferdinado Cadis and Isabella De Castile. He had a brother and three sisters, named Henry Nicholas, Eleanor, Mary and Catherine. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Ferdinand I and Isabella. Charles inherited a vast empire. He was a devout Catholic at a time when t
he monk Martin Luther emerged on the scene with his radical call for chur
ch reform. Charles opposed Luther at the Diet of Worms in 1521, but allow
ed him to escape execution as a heretic. Involved in numerous wars, Charl
es was too preoccupied to put a halt to the spread of Protestantism and t
he Reformation. He retired to a monastery in his later years and is thoug
ht to have had a nervous breakdown.
