1, 1864 in the record (no further information available on that record
). Maren D Marcusen, Andrew Martin, and Tellef John Israelson are record
ed as having emigrated 1864 from Norway on Monarch of the Sea. The inform
ation for these entries came from the LDS Biographical collection. The Mo
narch of the Sea was a 1979 ton, 223' x 44' x 24'and was built in 18
54 by Roosevelt Coyce and Co at New York City. Of the Mormon companies cr
osing the water under sail, the two largest were transported over the Atla
ntic in the largest sailing ship used by the Saints. According to o
ne of these passengers, she was "an excellent vessel, large, roomy, new a
nd clean." The 1929 Mormons in the two companies were an assembly of nati
ons - coming from England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Denmark, Sweden, Norw
ay, France, and Switzerland.....The second company, totaling 974 Saints, s
ailed from Liverpool on 28 April 1864. Elder John Smith, patriarch to t
he church, was in charge of the emigrants. His counselors were Elders Jo
hn D Chase, Johan P R Johansen, and Parley P Pratt, Jr.Master of the pack
et ws Captain Robert Kirkaldy. This company also represented many nation
s, particularly Scandinavia. Although the voyage of thirty-six days was q
uite pleasant, the death toll was unusually high -- forty-five accordi
ng to George Q Cannon and forty-one according to the passenger list. Mo
st of those who died were apparently children. The ship arrived at New Yo
rk on 3 June. The big three-decker, this clipper ship was exceptionally s
trong and fast and operated in the Washington Line out of New York. Bui
lt with the usual three masts, a round stern, and billethead, she was own
ed by Captain William R Gardner and other businessmen. After more th
an a quarter of a century in service the Monarch of the Sea was reported l
ost in 1880.!BIRTH-BAPTISM: Hyrum Ward, Record of Members; 1860-1901; Chur
