Nathaniel Foote 
Nathaniel was born on September 21st, 1592 in Shalford, Colchester, Essex, Eng. Nathaniel's father was Robert Foote and his mother was Joanne Brooke. His paternal grandparents were John Robert Foote and Helen Warren; his maternal grandparents were John Brooke and Elizabeth Whitman. He had eight brothers and four sisters, named Robert, David, James, Daniel, Joseph, Francis Daniel, Joshua, Samuel, Mary, Elizabeth, Elizabeth and Phebe. He was the sixth youngest of the thirteen children. He died at the age of 52 on November 20th, 1644 in Wethersfield, Hartford Co, CT. He was buried about 1644 in Wethersfield, New Haven, Connecticut.General Notes
Nathaniel's Apprenticeship
Nathaniel Foote The Settler resided in Shalford Parish, county Essex a
nd St Mary Bothaw Parish, London. at the age of sixteen was apprentic
ed on 21 September, 1608 to Samuel Croyle of Colchester, a "Grocer" and "F
ree Burgess", for a period of 8 years or until his 24th birthday in the ye
ar 1616. He was a grocer himself as of 18 Oct 1619, when he brought a mess
age from Beatrice Barker, Esq., located on East Street, St James Parish, C
olchester. .
A Short time after he finished his apprenticeship training, he was marri
ed to Elizabeth Deeming (In January of the year 1616) in Colchester, Esse
x, England. She was the sister of John Deeming, who was one of the first s
ettlers of Wethersfield Conn. in the year of 1615. John Deeming was for ma
ny years the one of the magistrates of the "Colony of the Connecticut" a
nd one of the Patenees named in it's charter.

The Movement to America
Sometime before the year 1633 the family moved from London England to Bost
on, Massachusetts and then Watertown, Massachusetts . In that same year (1
632 or 1633) Nathaniel took the "Oath of Freeman", as is indicated by t
he records of the "Colony of Massachusetts Bay." He was also one of the fi
rst settlers of the Wethersfield, Connecticut ... around the year 1635.
According to the records of "The Original Distribution of Lands Around Wet
hersfield" recorded in 1640, a short time after arriving in Wethersfie
ld in 1635, Nathaniel received a ten acre house lot on the east side of Br
oad Street. This land was near the south end of the street. Additionall
y, he became the owner of several other tracts laying in part in the gre
at meadow east of his house and containing close to 400 acres of land.
Note: Part of his land is now a public park at the foot of Broad Street.

Nathaniel's Profession
Even though Nathaniel's main profession in England was that of a Croche
t, he became a farmer. He was also active in the public trusts of the tow
n. He was appointed as a delegate to the "General Court" in the year 1644.

Nathaniel Foote was the first cousin of Sir Thomas Foote, Sheriff of Lond
on in 1649 and Lord Mayor of London in 1650. Sir Thomas Foote was the s
on of Robert Foote of Royston and the brother of Robert Foote of Shalfor
d, who was Nathaniel s Father.

Records show that Nathaniel Foote died in Wethersfield, Mass in Novembe
r, 1644 at the age of 51. He was buried in the burying ground in the re
ar of the town meeting house, where nine generations are buried. Nathani
el was survived by his wife, two sons, and five daughters.

Jr. Foote was born in 1620 in Shalford, Essex, England and his baptism took place on March 5th, 1620 in Ipswich, Suffolk, Eng. He died at the age of 35 in June 1655 in Wethersfield, Hartford Co, CT.
Mary Foote
