Margaret was an English princess. She and her mother sailed toScotla
nd  to escape from the king who had conquered their land.King Malco
lm of  Scotland welcomed them and fell in love withthe beautiful princes
s.  Margaret and Malcolm were marriedbefore too long.
As Queen, Margaret changed her husband and the country for thebetter.  Mal
colm was good, but he and his court were very rough.When he saw how  wi
se his beloved wife was, he listened to hergood advice. She softened  h
is temper and led him to practicegreat virtue. She made the court  beautif
ul and civilized. Soonall the princes had better manners, and the  ladi
es copied herpurity and devotion. The king and queen gave wonderful  examp
leto everyone by the way they prayed together and fed crowds ofpoor peop
le with their own hands. They seemed to have only onedesire: to  make ever
yone happy and good.
Margaret was a blessing for all the people of Scotland. Beforeshe came,  t
here was great ignorance and many bad habits amongthem. Margaret worked  h
ard to obtain good teachers, to correctthe evil practices, and to have  n
ew churches built. She lovedto make these churches beautiful for God's  gl
ory, and sheembroidered the priest's vestments herself.
God sent this holy Queen six sons and two daughters. She lovedthem  dear
ly and raised them well. The youngest boy became St.David. But  Margaret h
ad sorrows, too. In her last illness, shelearned that both her  husband a
nd her son, Edward, had beenkilled in battle. Yet she prayed:  "I thank Yo
u, Almighty God,for sending me so great a sorrow to purify me  from my sin
s."
