General Notes

Yancey Valentine , Callie and Claude Lee are buried in the
Concorde Methodist Church cemetery between
Elberton and Hartwell.  Y.V. was a vagabon and thru out his life would
disappear for long periods of time.  He would always return to Aunt
Callie between these  trips and she always took him back .  He had been
missing for two years just before his death when one day Callie returned
home and found him with a significant stroke lying on her porch.  She
carried him in and cared for him ' til his death two yrs. later.  Yancey
is reported to have sev. in the army or marines during WW1.  Once on
guard duty the officer of the day approached Yancey and was not
challenged to halt.  He chewed Yancey out and said when one approached
him Yancey should sing out Halt who goes there.  On the next rounds as
the officer approached Yancey hollered out " Tanka Lanka Tanka Lanka Halt
who goes there".  By history it was not funny to the officer.  At family
gathering he was always the center of attention because of his humor and
his continous flow of stories , true or untrue no one cared.  He was the
original entertainer.  He was also a tall and handsom man and always well
groomed.  In contrast his wife was very sweet and very reserved and
somewhat homely.
