Rachel Jane's father was Thomas Thompson Skaggs and her mother was Nancy Ann Vance. Her paternal grandparents were Charles Skaggs and Lucinda Thompson. She had six brothers and four sisters, named Alexander, Moses, William, Thomas Thompson ,Jr., Elijah, James Thomas, Nancy Carolina, Mary, Jemima and Susannah Frances.-
