His paternal grandfather was James ,Jr. Skaggs and his paternal grandmother is Mary Unknown. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Henry S., Stephen ,Jr., Sarah Louisa, Polly, Jane and Elizabeth. He is the third oldest of the seven children.-
