James Newton's father is John Daniel McLeod and his mother was Isabella Amanda Currie. His maternal grandparents were John Calvin Currie and Margaret Keahey. He had five brothers and four sisters, named William Angus, Malcolm McNair, John Calvin, Erdman Polk, Norman, Virginia Caroline, Lettie Elberta, Helen and Margaret Keahey.-
