In 1893, Sarah filed for a widow's pension based on husband William's service in the Union Army. Sarah's pension application lists only three children: James, Thomas, and Julia. Her son, William E., is listed as her attorney and William's wife, Mary, was one of the witnesses. Sarah is last listed in the 1900 census in Whitley County, living with her daughter, Julia, and son-in-law, John Smith. As of yet, no marker has been found for Sarah.
In 1893, Sarah Jane (Gregory) Gilreath filed a "belated" application for a pension based on William's service during the War. As part of her proof of William's service, statements were made on Sarah's behalf by a number of people. Benjamin Perry (B. P.) Gilreath, the youngest brother of William was among those making statements. William (a Private)and B. P. (a Sergeant) had both served a little over three months, in the same Unit, during the War.
