Severed in the 2nd Texas Infantry. Story related to Jeannette Scruggs about James William by her grandfather his son Samuel Newton: James W. became ill almost to the point of death and was told he could return home to die. His Wife, Penelope, took a man as a subsitute to the Mississippi River and exchanged him for James W. It was reemered him saying the man who was exchanged was probably a black man who worked for her while James W. was away at war. Penelope took her husband home and nursed him back to health . He would laugh that she was such a good nurse that afeter returning home he gathered my grandfather, Samuel Newton born in 1865. She still has the eye glasses that belonged to re great grand monther, Penelope Allen. Penelope was blind in one eye because while she was playing with her children she got sand in her eye. Without treatment it caused her to loose her sight in that eye.
James W. was captured at Shiloh or Visksburg as a Confederate soldier.
