Hugh was born about 1056. Hugh's father was Roger II de Montgomery and his mother was Mabel Talvas de Alencon-Belleme. His paternal grandparents were Roger I the Great de Montgomery and Josceline de Bolbec; his maternal grandparents were William II Talvas de Belleme and Hildeberge de Beaumont. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Roger, Robert II, Arnulph, Philip Grammaticus, Roger the Poitevin, Matilda, Sybil, Emma and Mabel. He has a half-brother named Everard.-
