Eleanor was born in 1260 in Okehampton, Devonshire, England.  Eleanor's father was Hugh de Courtenay and her mother was Eleanor le Despencer.  Her paternal grandparents were John de Courtenay and Isabel de Vere; her maternal grandparents were Hugh II le Despencer and Aliva (Aline) Basset. She had five brothers and five sisters, named John, Philips, Robert, Thomas, Hugh II, Margaret, Isabel, Egeline, Alice and Avelina.  She was the oldest of the eleven children.  She died after 1281.
