Mary Ethel was born after 1915. Mary Ethel's father was Gilbert Christopher Shaffer and her mother was Xerdine Blaine McClung. Her paternal grandparents were George Washington Shaver and Lucinda Judy. She had a brother and three sisters, named Lon Gaylon, Lenora Maye, Edna Irene and Anna Belle. She is the oldest of the five children.-
