His paternal grandparents were Johann Nicolas Schaffer and Maria Magdalena Juliana Ulrich; his maternal grandfather was Joseph Saab. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Adam, Michael, George, Nicholas, Catharina, Magdalena and Elisabeth. He died about 1835 in Mahanoy Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania.-
